Grilled Sunflower Head

Grilled Sunflower Head

Sunflower seeds are a common snack, but have you ever considered grilling your sunflower heads? This recipe has a very similar flavor to street corn, but with a very slight floral taste. I was very surprised at how tender the seeds became after grilling. Try this at home today!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Large Sunflower

  • 4 TBSP Olive Oil

  • 1 TBSP Sea Salt

  • 1 TBSP Pepper

  • 1 TBSP Paprika

  • 1 TBSP Garlic Powder

  • 1 TBSP Onion Powder

  • 1 TBSP Fresh Chives

Directions:

  1. Prepare your sunflower head by removing all leaves and gently removing the pollen from the center.

  2. Rub olive over the entire sunflower head.

  3. Add your salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder and onion powder. Massage well into the sunflower head.

  4. Grill face down for 6 minutes on a BBQ. You can also place your sunflower head face up on broil for 6-7 minutes.

  5. Carefully remove from your hot surface and let cool.

  6. You can enjoy this snack the same way you enjoy corn, or you can remove the seeds and eat them individually.

Enjoy!

Tips

To pick the best sunflower, ensure that the seeds in the center are still white. You will want to remove all petals and gently brush off the pollen covering the seeds on the head. when you are finished cleaning your sunflower head for grilling, it should look like this image to the left.
